Regarding the topic of genetic traits leading to increased chances of survival, I wonder if this "Darwinist," and therefore Victorian as Darwin was, rationality needs reevaluating? The Victorian period was male dominated, and throughout the 19th century and onwards into the beginning of the 20th century there was an increasing tendency towards Individual Social Darwinism and Organic Social Darwinism, in which, in Individual Darwinism, male led society argued that individuals survived according to their genetic strengths, while in Organic Darwinism, male led society argued that groups survived according to the groups genetic strengths. However, this is an extremely outdated male Victorian way of thinking, isn't it? Partly it is outdated because Victorians argued that brain size was so vital to the human "animal's" success but being men they neglected the fact that women have smaller brains than men. Since the Victorian time women have had a huge and awful battle to prove to male selfishness and male dominated society that women with their smaller brains are at least as intelligent as their male counterparts with their larger brains. In reality, the scientific evidence is that animals - including the human "animal" - survive for utterly random reasons. Take, just for example, a batch of sea turtle eggs laid on a beach. On average sea turtles lay a little over 100 eggs. But, out of a thousand eggs laid only about one baby sea turtle survives to adulthood. That one sea turtle that survived only did so by pure luck. Not because it had any genetic advantage over the 1,000 who were not so lucky. The world's oldest sea turtle fossil is at least 120 million years old, during which time there has been little or no adaptation to improve the beautiful creatures chances of survival. Proving that adaptation to survive isn't necessary, and whether we survive or not is completely random. Likewise, we humans have descended from Chimps or Bonobos (we don't know which we are, Chimp or Bonobo?) but Chimpanzees and Bonobos have not changed but still survive without adaptation for probably hundreds of thousands of years. Thus, changed was not necessary for their survival. Certainly we humans have massively extended our range of survival compared to Chimps and Bonobos. But, why one or other human genetic trait is successful or not does nonetheless seem - much like sea turtles - and most other creatures - in individual cases completely random. Take this imaginary scenario just for example: a blue eyed hunter in the Mesolithic period, during the dark winters of North Eastern Europe, finds that he is catching more prey than his brown eyed cousin. He's really successful at bringing fresh fish and meat home to the family cave and the girls really like him. Victorian male logic suggests that this handsome blue eyed hunter should be the one who "gets the girl" and passes his successful hunting blue eyed genes on. In reality he goes out hunting one day, slips on the ice, breaks his ankle and freezes to death. The girls wonder where he is but he never comes home to the family cave so they have babies with his brown eyed cousin. When we enter the time of history, we find these type of "fateful" chances of survival endlessly repeated. Hundreds of millions of strong men have been killed and have slaughtered each other in battles while weaker men have stayed home and become fathers. So to argue that we have blue eyes because they gave us a hunting advantage in the dark might be Victorian male Darwinist, or 20th century Individual Darwinist, "strong man" mindset based on pure fantasy about what the stone age was really like; a fanciful male assumption that you will wish to reassess? What do the girls say? After reading this, my daughter has commented that, while it is good that a man can put dinner on the table, she is not going to choose a partner based on his ability to hunt, but rather on him demonstrating care for her and her children. So survival is not about "strong man" militarist Victorian warriors but about how much tenderness a man can demonstrate.

Cattle are not usually driven over High ground when it can be helped....so the idea that hilltop forts are meant to "control movement" is a bit odd. You want to drive the cattle over easy ground and end up, at the end of each days drive, AT WATER. If the countryside is dangerous, I could see the transhumance people building the hill top forts themselves so they have safe places to lay over....are you SURE different people were engaged in driving the cattle and building the forts? I could see people who raise cattle needing forts to protect same. You say Transhumance co existed with Pastoralism for centuries....THAT is evidence that they were Not in heavy conflict with each other. Weak thin skin comes with blue eyes. Thin skin needs less sunshine to make D vitamin. Thick skin needs more sun to do that. D vitamins protection against cancer made blue eyes and thin skin prevalent in northern europe, in just a few generations. Eating D vitamin does NOT give the same protection. Current cancer figures among immigrants with aversion to sunshine demonstrate this as well.

If you have been up to the Lost Valley in Glencoe where the MacDonalds hid their cattle it is a natural hidden enclosure with grazing. Fully defensible. by location and its entrance up a steep hidden trail. Cattle were very valuable in ancient times.
